The EIA process runs in 5 phases. All phases involve stakeholders as an essential part of the EIA process.
The process itself is described in more detail in the study programme (Terms of Reference). Each phase gains more knowledge, so that after the preparation of baseline studies and a subsequent impact assessment, there can be a public consultation of a final draft report.
As part of the EIA process for the specific smelter project, the proposals for the studies have been in public consultation and presented at public meetings in Sisimiut, Maniitsoq and Nuuk in January 2009. Here the public could make comments and ask further questions about the project and studies, as well as propose any changes and additions. The proposal was also in consultation with the Government of Greenland’s relevant responsible authorities, in municipalities and interest groups.
